Learn to Race

Learn to Race

The learn-to-race program is designed to introduce young athletes to racing, without the commitment of the full race team.  Our goal is to have fun and develop great all mountain skiers while learning basic race technique.  The team starts at the same time as the ESP program (January 5th) and will continue until March 17 .  We will predominately teach through directed free-skiing and drills, but 2-3 days will include gate training to prepare the athletes for the races at the end of the year.  These are the Northern Division race at Discovery (March 1-3) and the Northern Division YSL Championships (Big Sky, March 15-17).  They also will race the Discovery Challenge.  The athletes will have the option for additional Sunday training with the race team as the season progresses.

Learn to race participants have mastered basic skills, are confident skiing at speeds on intermediate runs, and have an interest in learing to run gates.  By the end of the program, participants will understand course terminology (e.g., delay, flush, slalom, etc.), and can maneuver gates using basic racing techniques.  Participants may also learn to wax and tune skis.  Requires USSA registration to participate in USSA sanctioned races.

Skiers meet every Saturday.  Coaches have race experience.
